Some cricketing moments need context to appreciate. This one doesn't: five wickets, in five consecutive overs, without conceding a single run. No bowler in the history of recorded Test cricket had ever done that — until West Indies all-rounder Justin Greaves did it against Pakistan in Trinidad.
What Actually Happened
During the opening Test of the ICC World Test Championship series between West Indies and Pakistan at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Pakistan were cruising in their first innings. Captain Shan Masood had compiled a fine century (109), bringing Pakistan to 244/3 in response to West Indies' 311.
When West Indies captain Roston Chase turned to 32-year-old Justin Greaves, a historic spell unfolded. Greaves removed Masood to break the stand, before bowling Aamer Jamal, trapping Ali Usman LBW, and edging out Mohammad Rizwan across consecutive maiden overs. Returning immediately after lunch, Greaves claimed Mohammad Abbas caught behind on his very first ball to complete his maiden Test five-wicket haul (5/27 off 11 overs) — all five wickets falling across five consecutive wicket-maidens.
Why This Record Is Such a Big Deal
Greaves' performance broke the previous recorded benchmark of four consecutive wicket-maidens in Test cricket, set by former England pacer Stuart Broad against South Africa in Johannesburg back in 2016.
Taking a five-wicket haul without conceding a single run across five consecutive overs represents an unprecedented level of bowling control and discipline in Test cricket history.
The Man Behind the Moment
In his post-day press conference, Greaves remained humble despite his historic achievement:
"When I came on, captain Roston Chase just said 'continue to be disciplined in what you are doing' and to see if I can get some wickets for the team," Greaves explained. "The ball nipped around and I got some reward. To get five wickets for the first time in Test cricket, I'm really happy, but there's still a lot of work to do in the game."
