Not every viral baseball moment happens between the lines. Sometimes the most shared clip of the week comes from something completely unexpected — like an MLB outfielder getting flattened by a mascot before the game has even started.
That is exactly what happened to outfielder Alek Thomas during a Triple-A matchup, and social media platforms have had a field day with the footage.
What Actually Happened
Prior to a matchup between the Oklahoma City Comets and the Sacramento River Cats, Thomas emerged from the visiting dugout toward foul territory. As captured in a now-viral 13-second video circulated by Jomboy Media and Reddit, Sacramento mascot Dinger was cruising along the foul line on a motorized scooter during a "Christmas in July" promotion.
Thomas stepped into the mascot's path, leading to an immediate collision that sent both the player and mascot tumbling into the dirt. Fortunately, Thomas was uninjured and remained in the starting lineup for the game.
Why Mascot Chaos Goes Viral
Mascot mishaps remain one of the most consistent forms of viral sports content. From classic stadium bloopers featuring the Phillie Phanatic or Mr. Met to minor league promotional stunts, unscripted collisions between costumed mascots and professional athletes consistently draw massive engagement across X, Instagram Reels, and TikTok.
